An Ordinance Revising Sections 14-121 and 14-122 of Article IV of Chapter 14 of the
Code of Ordinances and Pertaining to Dogs and Cats in the City of Brookings, South Dakota
Be It Ordained and Enacted by the Council of the City of Brookings, State of South Dakota, as
follows:
I.
That Sections 14-121 and 14-122 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Brookings
pertaining to dogs and cats are amended as follows:
ARTICLE IV.
DOGS AND CATS
Sec. 14-121. - Dogs and cats running at (arge prohibited.
Except as permitted in an animal park designated for that purpose, it is unlawful for any person
to permit or allow a dog, cat or other animal to run at large within the city. All dogs and cats
must be restrained in such a manner so they cannot run at large within the city. All animals
shall be restrained at all times, by use of a leash, kennel, fenced yard, cable, electric fence or
other restraint so the animal will not be able to run at large.
Sec. 14-122. - Impoundment of dogs and cats.
The animal control officer may impound any dog, cat or any other animal which is at large if the
owner or caretaker of the dog, cat or other animal cannot be located or is not available to take
immediate possession of the animal. For purposes of this chapter, a dog or cat is considered at
large if it is not on a leash and is either off its owner's or caretaker's premises or is upon or
returns to its owner's or caretaker's premises and its owner or caretaker is not present at such
premises at such time.
I.
Any or all ordinances in conflict herewith are hereby repealed.
